1A THE BOSTON GLOBE FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 1992 51 CLASSIC CARS IMPORTED CARS IMPORTED CARS Rev. Murray W. former Brookline Rev. Murray W. Dewart, the former rector of St.

Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline who brought the edifice and the congregation back from a ruinous 1976 fire, died Wednesday in University Hospital of respiratory failure. He was 78. When he stood among the ruins of the 126-year-old church in January 1976, Rev. Dewart said he doubted whether the church would rebound because the congregation had been dwindling. Eight years later the church was rebuilt, the congregation as strong as ever, and Rev.

Dewart's two sons were installing a new pulpit they had designed, built and carved. Rev. Dewart's career covered going to sea as a merchant sailor, attending Harvard, working as a pipe fitter in a shipyard, graduating from Johns Hopkins University, attending divinity school, serving six parishes, becoming rector of St. Paul's, and concluding with a year as canon of the American Cathedral in Paris. Rev.

Dewart was born in Winchester, the son of Rev. Murray W. Dewart who served as chaplain of the 101st Field Artillery in World War I. Rev. Dewart's mother, Submit Tewksbury Clarke, was the daughter of the original publisher of the Manchester Union Leader.

Rev. Dewart attended Gilman School in Baltimore and in 1933 enrolled in Harvard College. But his scholarship was withdrawn, because the country was in the midst of the Depression, and he went to sea as a merchant seaman. He never went back to Harvard, but is listed as a member of the class of 1937. Harvard invited him to give the sermon at the 55th reunion of his class and he spoke on the theme of "Gratitude at the End of Our Pilgrimage." After a stint at sea, Mr.

Dewart worked in the Bethlehem Steel shipyard in Sparrows Point near Baltimore for three years. He enrolled in Johns Hopkins University in 1937 and graduated in 1941. He got his master of divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1943 and was ordained an episcopal priest in 1944. He served parishes in Waterville, DEATHS Malden, June 23, Francis X.
